with vol leyball began as a schoolboy at Techni cal High School in 1935 was considered a minor recalled Meltzer group of us who were interested in it during gym class got together and formed a club Meltzer went on to play on two state championship teams for the Spring field YMCA and continued his career for the Air orce team during World War II His playing days however ended prematurely During the early Meltzer suffered cartilage damage to one of his legs which prevented him from continuing as an active player Meltzer though found another way to remain active in the game he took up officiating volleyball It take Meltzer long to climb up the officiating ladder He began on the regional lever and it long before he rose to international atten tion and later refereed every national championship from 1958 79 Meltzer served on the US Olympic Committee for volleyball from 1972 76 He wrote the first syl labus on volleyall in 1962 which has been read all over the world In 1979 he retired was time to let the younger guys take and received the Emeritus Award for Officals Although he never officiated during Olympics Meltzer has traveled far for volleyball He has refereed in Italy Greece and Cuba During his 1959 visit to Cuba Meltzer met idel Castro The recent series on officals that appeared in The Daily News hit home to Meltzer He could relate to the men who officiate
