Synopsis

First Englishman in Japan, navigating power struggles and palace Intrigue

After a shipwreck near the Izu Peninsula, sailor John Blackthorne becomes the first Englishman in Japan. In a society driven by power and aspiring for the role of Shōgun, Blackthorne becomes part of Lord Toronaga's household. Within this setting of palace intrigue, he comes across Lady Mariko, a female samurai grappling with external forces who need her to prove her loyalty.

What to know

Hulu and FX is the official home to adaptation of James Clavell's epic novel

Shōgun is a limited series drama with historical elements on Hulu and FX from Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. Based on James Clavell's 1975 novel, this television adaptation draws inspiration from the real-life English navigator William Adams, loosely portrayed as John Blackthorne in the story. The novel, which received aprevious NBC television adaptation in 1980 starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune, presents a fictionalized account of historical events. In Japan under Tokugawa Ieyasu (depicted as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the story), Adams achieved the status of a "samurai."

Having worked on such to projects like Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, The Jungle Book and Top Gun: Maverick, co-creator Justin Marks collaborates with writer Rachel Kondo, an O. Henry Award finalist for her short story "Girl of Few Seasons," on Shōgun. Both Marks and Konda executive produce the series as well along with Edward L. McDonnell, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Michael De Luca and Michaela Clavell. Noteworthy producers also include star Hiroyuki Sanada and Eriko Miyagawa. Series directors include Jonathan van Tulleken, who helms the first two episodes, along with Charlotte Brändström, Hiromi Kamata and Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour.

Shōgun is led by Cosmo Jarvis and Hiroyuki Sanada portraying Pilot Major John Blackthorne and Lord Yoshii Toranaga, respectively. Anna Sawai portrays Toda Mariko, Tadanobu Asano plays Kashigi Yabushige and Fumi Nikaido is Ochiba No Kata. Other notable cast members include Tokuma Nishioka as Toda "Iron Fist" Hiromatsu, Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari, Ako as Daiyoin Lady Iyo, Shinnosuke Abe as Toda Buntaro, Yasunari Takeshima as Muraji, Hiroto Kanai portraying Kashigi Omi, Toshi Toda as Sugiyama, Hiro Kanagawa as Igurashi and Néstor Carbonell as Vasco Rodrigues.
