Shania Twain says her husband's affair nearly ended her career (2024)

Pop star Shania Twain has revealed the heartbreak she felt after her husband ran off with her best friend and how it nearly ended her high-profile singing career.

The 'Man! I feel like a woman' singer says she was so distraught over her husbandRobert 'Mutt' Lange's 2008 affair with Marie-Anne Thiébaud that she vowed to stop singing.

She told The New York Post: [I thought] 'Forget it, this is more than I can handle — I'm never going to sing again.' Adding: 'I had to grieve through it.'

Twain, 49, an international star known for her catchy hit songs like 'You're still the one' and 'Man! I feel like a woman' has sold a whopping 75 million albums worldwide.

Born, Eilleen Regina Edwards, she changed her name after a record label urged her too.

She was catapulted into the limelight after her 1995 album, 'The Woman in Me,' nabbed her the first of five Grammys.

But at the height of her fame, it all came crashing down after she found out about Lange's affair. Twain and her husband divorced after 14 years of marriage in 2008.

Her catchy country-pop songs could have easily become the anthem to her life as she faced her fair share of personal battles.

She didn't perform again for a number of years and went under the radar in the Switzerland home that she shared with her now ex-husband. She also battled Dysphonia - an impairment in the voice box.

She told The Post: 'When you have an impairment in the voice-box area, it affects you psychologically — you get gun-shy: 'Can I go for that note, that sound?' It's a vicious cycle.'

Love:Twain found love again - ironically with Thiébaud's ex-husband Frédéric Thiébaud - and the pair got hitched in 2011. She also threw herself into parenting her little boy, Eja, now 13-years-old.

It's been no secret that, Twain, who is currently on her first tour in a decade, has faced a series of tragedies in her life.

'I always said, as a kid, 'If I ever make it, I have to help kids like me. This tour [lets me] give back.'

In her 2011 memoir, 'From This Moment On,' she revealed the extent of her poverty-stricken childhood in her native Canada.

She also talked about the devastation that she felt after both of her parents died in a car crash when she was just 22.

But looking back on it all, she told the newspaper that she's proud that she did not let it all destroy her.

Twain found love again - ironically withThiébaud's ex-husband Frédéric Thiébaud - and the pair got hitched in 2011. She also threw herself into parenting her little boy, Eja, now 13-years-old.

She admits that she finds co-parenting with her ex-husband a little painful at times and says she refuses to talk to his wife, her former best friend.

She coldly told The Post: 'I don't invite that trigger into my life… She's not my future. She's my past.'

In 2012, after she regained her confidence, Twain took to the stage with a residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas but said 'it took so much effort' that she nearly decided to pull the plug on her career again.

She has now embarked on her final tour - 'Rock this Country' - and will make a stop at Madison Square Garden in New York on Tuesday.

She plans to donate every $1 made from this tour to her charity Shania Kids Can - which helps disadvantaged schoolchildren.

'I always said, as a kid, 'If I ever make it, I have to help kids like me,' ' Twain told The Post. 'This tour [lets me] give back.'
